Eyebrows-One Woman's Journey to Triumph

My friend Trulie is pretty.  Of course, she is beautiful on the inside and all that, but, for the sake of this post, we're going to ignore her inner beauty and focus on her face.  I'm here to report that Trulie's face just got a little bit prettier, at least by the metric of popular culture.  How did she do it?    Trulie recently made the brave, often grueling decision to grow out her eyebrows.  In public.

If you're female and have any access to the media, you are aware that big brows are back with a vengeance.  Cara Delevingne alone has set the eyebrow world on it's ear.

For a long time, many of us thought we looked more "grown up" with plucked or waxed brows. Now looking "grown up" is not necessarily the goal.  Beauty experts tell us that full brows frame the face in a youthful way and, if done well, can mean you don't need as much makeup.  I am in for both of those things.

So was Trulie.  Here is some photographic evidence of her transformation.

Trulie had the final step of her brow transformation completed by a woman named Michelle Lemoncello-Schak for Anastasia at the Nordstrom in OakBrook.  Why not pay her a visit?!

How to make the most of your brows:

  • Stick with a natural approach.  Your eyebrow has a natural place it wants to arch.  Keep the arch there.  Keep as much of the the natural eyebrow shape that makes sense.  We all have a rogue  hair or two.  Pluck those but keep the rest.
  • Use a pencil or other product to fill in brows and keep them tidy.  I use Anastasia Perfect Brow Pencil.  It has a brush on one side and great, natural colors:
  • Check out this post on Buzz Feed for step by step, in-depth instructions from a professional on how to make the most out of your brows.

Trulie says the growing out phase "wasn't that bad" and I think it was totally worth the results!!  Hopefully Trulie's journey is an inspiration to you if you are thinking of growing out your brows!  Do it!

I love Words

I love words.  I love big words, poetic words, powerful words, interesting combinations of words and, of course, swear words.  I’m careful with the words I choose to think and choosy with the words I speak.  Except in traffic.  I believe words shape our thoughts, inspire us, comfort us, unite us and transport us.  And lately, they even clothe us.

I have wholeheartedly jumped on board with the trend of wearing words.  I recently left the house in my “THANKFUL” t-shirt, my “LOVE” and “PEACE” cuffs (Wonder Woman style) and my “BE NOT AFRAID YOU WERE BORN FOR THIS" necklace (a gift from a dear friend) wondering if I should grab my “SPIRITUAL GANGSTER” pull-over for later.  It's not often I need to take a step back to literally edit my look.

The idea of wearing words is certainly not new.  Who among us doesn't have a sports, college or vacation t-shirt somewhere in the house?   My husband went to Notre Dame and my Notre Dame t-shirt is just as effective as lingerie when I feel like being provocative.  Wearing words or logos or brands helps us express to others what we're about, and that may never go out of style.  My Spiritual Gangster sweatshirt might, though.

And who doesn't love words on jewelry?   If you are a mother, there is a 87% chance you own a tiny circle charm stamped with the first letter of your child’s name in lower case typewriter font.  It has become a rite of passage for sleepy new mothers everywhere to shop for the perfect piece of engraved jewelry that proves beyond a medical certainty they are a mother.  I have a drawer full.

If you are interested in taking word-wearing to the next level, I’d like to bring these to your attention:

Goodhyouman:   Every woman who considers herself fashionable but also values comfort should try the “Paige” t-shirt.  So soft, so flattering, so cool.  I actually wish they sold it plain for when my love affair with wearing words fades.  They change the sayings printed on the shirt, so keep checking back until you see one you like.  Get your "thankful" t-shirt in time for Thanksgiving!    The founder of Goodhyouman is all about putting good in the world.  Isn't that nice?

Lisa Leonard Designs:  A lot of your basic, cute Mom jewelry.  I like the stacking rings.  If you don't have kids you could put any words you like.  I don't know if "onomatopoeia" and "acetaminophen" will fit, but you get the idea.

Spiritual Gangster:  Cute “workout” stuff.  I wear workout stuff as actual clothes, but you can workout in them and the messages are lovely.

What words are you wearing?
